Bellver means "beautiful view." And yes – the name fits. Just about three kilometers from the city center of Palma de Mallorca, you'll have an impressive view of the city from up here: the cathedral, the rooftops, the harbor, and the sea.

What truly makes Bellver Castle special is not just its location, but its shape. The entire floor plan is circular – just like the central inner courtyard. This seems surprisingly modern, even though the complex is over 700 years old.

The castle was built in the early 14th century under King Jaume II of Mallorca, originally as a royal residence. Over time, however, its use changed multiple times: Bellver temporarily served as a prison for political prisoners, was used militarily, and is now a museum of Palma's city history.

You should plan about 1-2 hours for your visit to Bellver Castle – that's enough time to explore the complex at your leisure.

Since there are only a few parking spaces directly at the castle, it's worth parking your car a little further down and combining the walk up with a short stroll through the pine forest.

Alternatively, you can easily get here by bus from the city center of Palma de Mallorca. Line 4 goes to Plaça Gomila, from there it's about a 15–20 minute uphill walk to the castle. Or you can take one of the hop-on-hop-off buses that stop directly in front of the castle.

A visit in the late afternoon/early evening is most beautiful. When the sun slowly sets and the last rays of light are reflected in the circular corridors, the place has something magical, and the view over the city is unique!
